Is your toddler active in his or her activities? Do they use their imagination? Can they actually do some things for themselves? If you can answer no to any of these questions, then it’s time to turn off the tv and those DVD’s and video games, and be a part of your child’s activities. When a toddler/child sits and watches television all day or is actively watching DVD’s or playing video games to pass the time, everything is pretty much laid out and done for them. No imagination or much activity required. They will soon become better know as couch potatoes.

A toddler needs some sort of an active imagination in order to learn things for themselves. Sure it’s okay to have little learning toys such as books with sound buttons and a DVD or two to help with the learning of numbers, the alphabet, animals, and even a few songs. But don’t go overboard with these things. A child needs hands on activity. Sometimes, less really is more.

If you do some of the games, songs, and activities with your toddler/child, they will get more out of it, as they also get more of your time. Children are people too, who in turn need recognition that they exist other than at mealtime, bath time, and bedtime. Spend an hour or two actually playing activities with them. Play roll the ball into a tower of blocks, knocking them down, and then let the child restack them. This helps with motor skills and is good for hand/eye coordination.

Toddlers/children love to dance and sing, which is a great physical activity for exercise. Sing songs with them that require finger, hand, and body movements, as well as remembering sounds, items, and words. Three great songs for this activity is: ‘Itsy, Bitsy, Spider’- ‘The Wheels on the Bus’- and ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes’.

A sandbox or even a small plastic pool filled with sand is a great hands on movement activity. It does well for the imagination plus also helps develop hand/eye coordination. There are many sand toys that can be purchased, plus also, lots of household items work extremely well. Such things as measuring cups, spoons, strainers, funnels, plastic bowls and cups; the list can go on and on. Watch, or better yet, play with they as they learn to build a dirt cake and start adding sticks for candles or little rocks as decorations. This is where imagination and learning come together. Help them build a sand castle and use plastic cookie cutters to press shapes on the walls.

When I was growing up, we didn’t have DVD’s, tapes, or video games, and my parents certainly didn’t let us sit in front of the television for hours at a time. We spent most of our time outside when the weather was nice, and on cold or bad weather days, we found inside games and ideas to do like building a fort by putting a sheet over some chairs or boxes. We did arts and crafts like gluing macaroni to paper plates, and then adding some string and beads for decoration. Use some imagination yourself while thinking of activities for your toddler or young child. Think about years ago when they didn’t have all these new fangled gizmos to entertain with. What might have they come up with?
